Mosaic from the Church of the Saviour

Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista

DESCRIZIONE:
Before the construction of the late 15th century cathedral, in the same area there were three medieval churches dedicated to the Saviour, Saint John and Saint Mary de Dompno. The first dated back to the 6th century, but it underwent rebuilding work after the year 1000 AD. The presbytery was raised and its floor was decorated with a black and white mosaic embellished with terracotta pieces. In the centre, the personification of Luck is spinning a wheel (representing human destiny) as fantasy creatures snap at it. All around is the ocean, with the winds in the four corners of the square. All of the inscriptions are taken from the Etymologiae and De Natura Rerum by Isidore of Seville.
