The Revolt of Masaniello

Michelangelo Cerquozzi

Spada Gallery

DESCRIZIONE:

The work depicts the famous popular uprising in Naples that started on 7 July 1647, led by Tommaso Aniello d’Amalfi, better known as Masaniello. A painter of Bamboccianti and battles, Cerquozzi created the painting without leaving Rome, probably following suggestions given to him by his colleague Viviano Codazzi who actually witnessed the events.
