The Entombment of Christ
Flaminio, Parioli, Villa Borghese
The painting was made by Raphael for the Baglioni chapel in Perugia, where it remained for approximately one century, then one night of 1608 Scipione Borghese had it stolen, with the connivance of the priests, to place it in his collection. Conventionally known as the Deposition, it actually is a depiction of the Christ being carried to the sepulchre. The figure of a young man with his back turned in the middle of the painting is traditionally identified as Grifonetto Baglioni, the young man killed in a duel in honour of whom the mother Atlanta ordered the work. The Gallery shows another famous painting by Raphael: Young woman with unicorn.
