San Giovanni, Esquilino, Monti

Rome Opera House
Built for Domenico Costanzi by Achille Sfondrini (1878-80), it was heavily modified by Marcello Piacentini (1926-28), who, among other things, created the new facade with the porticus. The hall has maintained its look from the 1800s, with the vault frescoed by Annibale Brugnoli, which also has stucchi in the deco style. The first season of the opera in this theatre was inaugurated on 27 November 1880 with the Semiramide by Rossini, in the presence of the royals Umberto I and Margherita di Savoia. In 1926 the City of Rome bought the theatre.
