The work is one of the most famous mosaics of Rome and depicts Christ's descent for the Final Judgement. Jesus is shown coming down out of the clouds, as if descending a stairway, with Saints Peter, Paul, Cosma, Damiano, Teodoro and Pope Felix IV, the commissioner of the work, who holds a model of the church itself in his hands. In the lower section is the Agnus Dei with the Twelve Lambs, symbolizing Christ and the Apostles. The mosaic underwent intense restoration work under Urban VIII Barberini in the 1600s.
