San Giovanni Battista
The sculpture was originally done for the altar of the Church of Sant'Orsola, where it appeared in 1493. On an unspecified date, it was moved to San Giovanni dei Fiorentini and, in the mid-1900s, when it was attributed to Donatello, it was placed at the door of the sacresty. Recently it was linked to Michelangelo, identified with a lost statue of Saint John the Baptist, cited in the biographies of the great sculptor as one of his early works.
