Le origini romane
Passeggiata nel Quadrilatero tra rovine romane ed edifici medievali
Only a few traces remain today of the old Julia Augusta Taurinorum; for example, Porta Palatina is an exceptionally well-preserved example from the Roman age.
A short distance away, along the corridors of the Museo dell’Antichità, works from the classical age that have been collected over the centuries by various members of the family of Savoy are housed. It was duke Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy who, in the midst of the Renaissance, started the collection buying from a large number of intermediaries books, scientific instruments, paintings and objects from the Roman age, symbol par excellence of nobility and prestige at the time.
The grid of the Quadrilatero Romano district still preserves medieval elements that are visible in the streets names which draw on the old guilds (for example via dei Mercanti, via degli Stampatori) and in the architectures of some buildings.
Along the way you come across the Chapel of the Annunciation of San Domenico, a wonderful example of Gothic architecture, and the evocative votive offerings of the Church of Santa Maria Consolatrice.
