The square has a rectangular shape and was known as the square of Wood, because it was the location of the wood market. Its arrangement dates back to the 1800s and is characterised by different stately buildings including Palazzo Ceriana and Teatro Alfieri (1855), one of the most prestigious theatres of the city. In the centre are the Angelic Fountain of the Four Seasons, made by Giovanni Riva in 1930, and the Equestrian monument of Prince Ferdinand, Duke of Genoa, made by Alfonso Balzico in 1877 in memory of the battle of Novara for the Italian unification (1849).
