Venice - "This year more than ever all the Biennale is in the Biennale", announced this morning President Paolo Baratta in the press conference of "Fundamentals". The 14th International Architecture Exhibition, directed by Rem Koolhaas, will open on June 7th, 2014.

The event features many new entries, above all the extended duration, that will last about six months instead of three, as for the Art Biennale. Even the number of Pavilions has increased, from 53 to 63, including UAE, Indonesia, Turkey and many others.
The real innovation, in particular, concerns the involvement of the curators from each country. "Differently from the past editions, they were not only informed about the theme selected by the curator for "his own" Exhibition. On the contrary, he suggested a theme within a unitary concept, one that could represent an introduction and and an integration of the whole research project of the Biennale this year", Baratta said. It is precisely "research" the main word of this edition: spanning different disciplines, it will try to overcome the conformism and the indifference generated by economy and technology towards this practice, as Massimiliano Gioni already did.

Anticipating some of the projects, Rem Koolhaas introduced his research on the evolution of architecture in the last century, suggesting the theme "Absorbing Modernity 1914-2014". Its strict connection with politics and national identities is particularly interesting: the latter are more and more evanescent and homologated to international experiences, for reasons that, in some cases, are completely opposite from country to country.

"Elementi di Architettura" is located in the Central Pavilion and was created in collaboration with experts, writers and scholars. Here, simple elements will gain new relevance: "The history of the world would not be the same without - let's say - balconies. Many important events occurred because of them, I have never paid attention to some of these details", Rem Koolhaas explains. "These radical changes have never been documented before, to me it is like looking through a microscope and discover the existence of a totally different species of architecture."

Finally, the Padiglione Italia, curated by Cino Zucchi, will be an opportunity to read the evolution of architecture in our Regions through various artistic disciplines. As for the whole Biennale, conceived as a sort of gesamtkunstwerk, a total work of art, many educational activities, lectures and debates will follow the Cinema, Theatre, Music and Dance sections during the entire period of the Exhibition.
