The Sforza Chapel

Michelangelo Buonarroti

The Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major

DESCRIZIONE:
Designed by the great florentine artist, Michelangelo at the age of 87, two years before his death, the work was carried out by the architect himself as was often the case (the Dome of Saint Peter's for example). It may be considered the last work of Michelangelo, who created an eliptical vaulted space with apses framed by columns. It is the second chapel on the lefthand aisle and is dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption as declared by the altarpiece. On the sides of the chapel are the tombs of the chapel's patrons, Cardinal Guido Ascanio Sforza and his brother Alessandro, also a Cardinal.
