Once the villa of Cardinal Oliviero Carafa and then Ippolito d’Este, it was purchased by Pope Gregory XIII (1572-85) as a summer residence for the pontiff. It was worked on by architects Martino Longhi il Vecchio and Ottaviano Mascherino. Under Sixtus V,  Domenico Fontana built the facade (1589), to which was added the portal by Carlo Maderno (1615). The circular tower and the Loggia delle Benedizioni are by Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1626, 1635). The most important interior decorations were done by Pietro da Cortona for Alexander VII. From 1870, it was the Palace of the Savoys and since 1947, it has been the residence of the President of the Republic.
