Not far from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers stands the simple rough stone sarcophagus of Giovanni Randaccio. An infantry captain on the Karst front and comrade-in-arms of the writer Gabriele D’Annunzio, he died attempting to raise the Italian flag over Duino castle, near the river Timavo. And it was D’Annunzio who wrote his epitaph (vitam dedit Timavo, “he gave his life for the Timavo”) based on the text of a famous Latin inscription kept at the National archaeological museum, Aquileia.
