Fontana dell’Acqua Paola
Erected under Paolo V at the start of the 1600s, as the embellished terminal of the Trajan Acqueduct that the pontiff Borghese reactivated, it was built by Flaminio Ponzio and Giovanni Fontana (1610-12). The structure, inspired by roman triumphal arches, is made up of three arches with a crowning pediment of mixed lines, typical of baroque architecture. The fountain, in Rome known popularly as the “Fontanone” (the really big fountain), looks out over one of the most spectacular panoramas of the city.
