The painting is a perfect example of the psychological portrait Lotto invented. The letter with the ring, the scattered petal and the green lizard actually show us that this young man has been hurt by love, which has caused him to turn away from his amusements and his music to dedicate himself to commerce, as indicated by the double-entry register and the chest with keys.
