The church, a part of the Gerolamini convent, was re-built between 1505 and 1548 on a design by Scarpagnino who changed its orientation from the previous building, aligning it with the bridge. The very simple facade hides one of the most important cycles of paintings of the city, painted in fits and starts by Paolo Veronese on commission by Bernardo Torlioni, his fellow citizen and convent abbot. The painter asked to be buried inside the church.
