The grand painting was commissioned by Pope Innocent XII to the painter from Ancona (roman by choice), for the main alter of the baptismal chapel of Saint Peter's at the Vatican designed by Carlo Fontana. In 1730, the work was moved to Santa Maria degli Angeli to save it from humidity and substituted by a mosaic by Pietro Paolo Cristofari (1734).
