DESCRIZIONE:

The basilica is built on the christian cemetery where, according to tradition, the remains of Peter and Paul were brought during times of persecution. For this, it was also called the Basilica Apostolorum. It was then dedicated to Saint Sebastian, dead at the end of the Third Century under Diocletian. The church was rebuilt by Cardinal Scipione Borghese at the beginning of the 1600s with his “family” architects Flaminio Ponzio and Giovanni Vasanzio.

The catacombs under the church, among the few which have always been accessible, contain sarcophagi, paintings and graffiti.
