In a space designed by Renzo Piano on the rooftop of the Lingotto building, defined by Renzo Piano himself as "a treasure chest", the art gallery was established in 2002 around a permanent collection of 25 masterpieces ranging from the 1700s to the 1900s (23 paintings and 2 sculptures). It includes works by Canaletto, Bellotto, Tiepolo, Canova, Renoir, Manet, Modigliani, Matisse and Picasso. Starting from 2007 a temporary exhibits programme was added.
