Self-portrait

Leonardo da Vinci

Royal Library

DESCRIZIONE:
This is considered the only real portrait of the artist and it is still the image popularly associated with the great genius of the Renaissance. It dates back to the last years of Leonardo’s life, when he was working in the service of Francis I in France. The artist’s faithful assistant Francesco Melzi inherited the picture along with his body of drawings, notes and manuscripts. Charles Albert of Savoy bought it in 1840.
